Fun, Fresh, Authentic
Children are curious, spontaneous, silly, energetic, and above all, completely unpredictable. So how do you plan family portraits with a rambunctious child? My advice is to let go of any expectations of cooperation and think more along the lines of a play date. This will not be a stiff family portrait session like you may find with other photographers.
You should expect your family portrait session to be a laid-back and fun experience!
Don’t think of it as “family portrait day” — as this will only result in unnecessary stress (for both you and your children). Children are encouraged to run around and play, jump on the bed, get a little muddy in the park or sandy on the beach. My goal is to capture connections, spontaneous expressions, and natural smiles that go way beyond the traditional family portraits! The results are the most genuine when the children are able to forget that the camera is even there.
